Ladies and gentlemen of the Nobel Committee,
I am writing to you concerning Edward Snowden and The President of the United States of America, Barack Obama.
Of course, there is no need to explain the case since the situation of Edward Snowden and the intentions and actions of the Government of The United States of America are closely followed by the media worldwide.
My question to you concerning this matter is: Would you like to grant Edward Snowden asylum or rather: would you like to plea for his asylum in Norway?
There are two main reasons I suggest you consider these options:
First:
You awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to Barack Obama “for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples” in 2009. However, international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples are, I think you agree, not supported by attacks of unmanned aerial vehicles which are contrary to international law, Guantánamo, which is contrary to international law, too, and by spying personal private data, the latter brought to light by Edward Snowden. I am sure that your plea for granting Edward Snowden asylum would remind The President of the United States to reclaim his responsibility as a laureate of the Nobel Peace Prize.
Second:
Though there is a bilateral extradition treaty between Norway and the US, it contains in Article 7 “a political offense exception clause which prohibits extradition where the offense for which extradition is sought is regarded by the requested State as a political offense or where the person sought can prove that the request for extradition has in fact been made with a view towards trying or punishing that person for an offense of a political character.”
To grant asylum to Edward Snowden would not only mean to save a powerless individual person from a powerful and obviously political offended State. It would mean to gain time for a general discussion, too, of the personal data collection affair as well as of the definition, meaning and origins of terrorism and war or, to put it positively: of the definition, meaning and origins of peace.
I have no personal contact to Edward Snowden and, of course, not to Barack Obama. But perhaps the idea outlined above would bring a peaceful solution to all.
Yours faithfully,
Florian Mahler
